Staff Writer (Ninty Fresh)

Do you miss the hey-day of print Nintendo magazines? Wish they were still around? Perhaps you are a games writer with a huge passion for Nintendo and want somewhere to stick your thoughts and musings. Or maybe, just maybe, you are a huge walking encyclopaedia of knowledge for the iconic Japanese company and want to get started writing.

If any of the above rings true, then we have the ideal position; we are looking for a Staff Writer! It’s not a job per se, as we are an independent enthusiast operation, but it’s also not unpaid. Think of it as a freelance staff writing opportunity!

What is Ninty Fresh?

Ninty Fresh is a brand new print Nintendo magazine and we launched our debut issue at the end of July, with work having already been started for our second issue. Envisaged as a modern reinterpretation of ONM (Official Nintendo Magazine) crossed with Retro Gamer, the idea is a fresh look at all things Nintendo, from NES to Now. Our launch issue is an 84-page behemoth crammed with 21 pages of Super Mario history, two game retrospectives and fun and games, spliced with an interview from Tim Street (former NOM editor) and some newer Switch game reviews.

To elevate our operation and drive improvement, we are looking for someone truly exceptional, with outstanding knowledge, passion and understanding of Nintendo systems and its games. The ideal applicant will have a wealth of experience playing Nintendo titles across many (and ideally all) of the Japanese developers’ devices and would preferably have an affinity and understanding of print Nintendo coverage.

What would a Staff Writer erm, write?

As a staff writer for Ninty Fresh, we would be looking for you to contribute to our themed pieces, offer and pitch ideas for features and even undertake huge retrospective reviews. In addition to completing reviews for issues, we would be looking for you to drive the quality of the magazine forward. This would obviously require you to work around deadlines and to a schedule, so excellent time-management skills are crucial.

We are looking for someone passionate, enthusiastic and self-starting, able to work as part of a team and with/without direction. Someone that understands and welcomes the prestige of writing about Nintendo and committing it to print. And has a huge amount of Nintendo knowledge in their head. Is this you?

Candidate Criteria:

  • Outstanding knowledge and understanding of Nintendo’s gaming history
    Previous experience with a myriad of Nintendo devices
  • Have excellent written and communication skills
  • Be a creative thinker
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Have exemplary time management skills
  • Be enthusiastic, efficient and reliable
  • Be able to accept criticism to improve

  • Why you are the best candidate for the role
  • Examples of your previous work
  • Failure to adhere to the above guidance will automatically disqualify your application. Careful reading and following of instructions are crucial elements of the role, and an inability to manage this at application stage does not bode well.

    If your initial application is successful, we will also require you to produce a 600-word review of any Nintendo title. We will explain in more detail if we decide to move you on to the next stage of the process. We will also require a feature pitch.
